Recording session information

If Larry Taylor's story reads like a Who's Who of blues, it is because it is one! Larry Taylor, (aka The Mole) was a founding member of the group Canned Heat. After recording and touring with that group, he recorded and toured extensively with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers when John moved to the Los Angeles area. Larry met Randy when the Sugarcane Harris Group was formed in the late sixties. This group, co-founded by Paul Lagos of Kaleidescope fame, later became the Pure Food and Drug Act when Harvey Mandel joined it. Larry has since gone on to play with John Lee Hooker, Tom Waits and Kim Wilson (ex Fabulous Thunderbirds). Larry and Randy toured Europe and Asia together with John Mayall and can be heard on Mayall's compilation CD Room To Move with Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor.

Coleman Head plays guitar and slide on the CD. He produced all of the Fresno sessions. He probably did more than anyone else to help this music get made. He also co-wrote two of the songs, Temptation and Girls Please Girls. He lives in Clovis, California and plays and records with his group, Driver. Coleman has written hundreds of songs, many of which have been recorded on other albums.

waiting for photo Ron E. Beck has performed with such artists as Clifford Coulter, Bill Withers, John Lee Hooker, Sylvester, Lydia Pense, The Pointer Sisters and of course he played drums in the legendary Oakland group Tower Of Power. He currently plays in the Bay Area as well as touring and remaining a session player very much in demand. Ronnie is also an accomplished and soulful singer when he comes out from behind the drums.

Victor Conte (aka Walkin' Fish for reasons obvious to those who have had the pleasure of seeing him onstage), has played with Tower of Power and Herbie Hancock Monster Band. Victor played in the Pure Food and Drug Act (PFDA) with Randy, Don 'Sugarcane' Harris and Paul Lagos.

Freddie Roulette is a legendary blues figure from the Chicago scene. He has played with Charlie Musselwhite, Earl Hooker and many other blues giants. He played with Randy in a band called Common Ground which included Coleman Head, Lonnie Castille and Victor Conte. In Common Ground, the members always kept their eyes on Freddie's pipe which went vertical when Freddie was playing a smokin' solo. Freddie recorded an album on the Janus label called Sweet Funky Steel, featuring a song written especially for him by Randy called Mr. Roulette (see below). Freddie currently lives and plays in the Bay Area.

An interview with Fred can be found at Brad's lap steel guitar pages

Nate Ginsberg has played with Steve Miller, Todd Rundgren, Paul Williams, Freddie Fender, Norton Buffalo, Del Shannon and Mary Wells. He played in the Herbie Hancock Monster Band and is currently very active playing in the Bay Area as well as touring internationally with singer Pamela Rose.

Ray Raymond Haney has recorded with such diverse artists as Jerry Miller of the legendary Moby Grape as well as cult band Kinky Freedman and the Texas Jewboys. He lives in Clovis, Ca. and has played and recorded with DRIVER since 1987. His current passion is completing material for an upcoming c.d. with pet project Blue Moon.

Recording session information and Techie Trivia

The original recording sessions took place in Newport Beach, Fresno and Menlo Park, California as well as in Paris, France. The first song recorded was What Kind Of World and the last song recorded was The Woman In White. The cappucino at the Newport Hilton sucked according to Larry, who says it's made from syrup. Most of the motels on PCH wouldn't let us in at 3 AM... Wonder why? To Love was mixed in Paris, France by Steve Forward. Steve has mixed albums for Ray Charles, McCartney, Chris Rea, Tower of Power (there's that name again!) and many other international stars.
Randy : "I've never seen an engineer work as hard as Steve!"

The premastering for the CD was done in 1995 at the RESMO facilities in Paris, France using SAW from Innovative Quality Software and written to DAT on a Pentium 90 through the CardD+ and digital I/O card by Digital Audio Labs (DAL).

Mastering to PCM-1630 was done at 44.1 in Paris and the CD was pressed at MPO.
